Front Load BMX Stems & Top Load BMX Stems
The Significance of BMX Stems
The BMX stem's role on a freestyle BMX bike is to connect the handlebars to the fork. Within the stem, compression takes place to ensure they are held together firmly. The BMX bike stem significantly influences the feel of the bike's front end. Stems are obtainable in various lengths and heights, affecting how stable or responsive the bike will seem.
What BMX Stem Size is Suitable for Me?
When determining the appropriate size for your BMX stem, focus on two measurements: the reach/length and the rise.
The reach of a BMX stem refers to the distance from the centre of the fork tube hole to the centre of the handlebar clamp. A 50 mm reach is fairly standard; a longer reach enhances stability while a shorter reach results in greater responsiveness.
The rise of a BMX stem is the measurement of height at which the stem holds the handlebars above the stem body centre. This impacts the positioning height of the handlebars, and can range from 8 to 36 mm. Choosing a particular stem height is largely a matter of preference, based on how comfortably you are positioned on your bike.
Top Load BMX Stem Versus Front Load BMX Stem
The handlebars can be mounted in two ways on the stem: top load mounting and front load mounting. On a front load stem, the handlebars are attached at the front of the stem. This design is often favoured by taller riders, as it places the handlebars further from the rider.
Conversely, a top load stem mounts the handlebars on top of the stem. This type of stem is taller than a front load stem. If you prefer riding with taller handlebars, a top load stem is advisable.
Remember! When selecting a stem, ensure its diameter matches that of your handlebars. This information is available in the product specifications. The two sizes of BMX Handlebars are 22.2 mm (regular) or 25.4 mm (oversized).
