BMX Handlebars
What Should I Understand About BMX Handlebars?
Handlebars for BMX bikes are vital for maintaining control. They are robust and durable, typically crafted from 4130 Chromoly, aluminium, or high tensile steel. Many bars undergo heat treatment, a process that further enhances their strength.
BMX bars are classified into two-piece and four-piece variants. Two-piece bars are constructed from two tubes, with one bent to form the main bar and the other spanning the “U” between the grips, providing stability. Four-piece bars consist of two main bars arranged vertically in opposition, connected by two crossbars. Your choice relies on personal style and does not significantly affect your ride.
How Are BMX Handlebars Assessed?
When purchasing any BMX bar, four aspects should be considered: rise, width, upsweep, and backsweep. A bar’s upsweep defines the angle at which the grips incline upwards. The backsweep indicates how the bars curve backward from the centre. While the upsweep and backsweep are largely down to personal preference, they do not dramatically alter how your bike feels. Rise indicates the height of the bar, measured from its lowest to the highest point. The width is the distance from one end to the other of the bar, typically between 27 to 31 inches. Let’s explore the basic guidelines for selecting the appropriate bar.
Which Size BMX Handlebars Suit Me?
The rise or height of your handlebars is mainly a personal choice. Many taller riders favour taller bars for enhanced comfort, as these prevent excessive hunching. View our Handlebars Size Chart for further insight into the suitable height for you.
In terms of width, it's advised to select a bar matching the breadth of your shoulders. A slightly wider bar offers greater stability when riding, though some riders prefer a narrower bar to allow more knee room.
