Skateboard Griptape
Skateboard Griptape Offers Traction and Aesthetic Appeal
Skateboard griptape is a self-adhesive layer applied to the skateboard's surface. Resembling sandpaper, it is textured to ensure a strong stance and grip on the board. Most skateboard griptapes are produced using silicon carbide, and they typically measure 9 x 33 inches (23 cm x 84 cm). Available in single sheets or griptape rolls, they cater to different needs.
Although black griptape is the most common, skateboarders are increasingly opting for brightly coloured versions. Some brands also manufacture clear griptapes.
Steps to Remove Skateboard Griptape
Regular skating can wear down skate griptape, particularly if you frequently use your board. The granulated layer becomes smooth from shoe contact and dirt, complicating trick performance.
To remove griptape, direct hot air onto it with a hairdryer. This heat loosens the adhesive, making it easier to peel off using a box knife. Any remaining adhesive residue can be scraped away gently after softening with nail polish remover or another alcohol-based cleaner. Once clean, a fresh griptape can be added to the deck.
Procedure for Applying Griptape on a Skateboard
Applying skate griptape is a straightforward process requiring minimal tools. Begin by removing the backing paper to expose the griptape's sticky side. Carefully place this sticky side onto the deck, ensuring it is centrally aligned before securing it to the board.
As you press it onto the deck, ensure all air bubbles are eliminated - many griptapes today have perforations to assist with this. After this, cut the corners of the griptape and create guidelines by pressing the tape along the deck's edges with a tool. Once completed, trim the excess griptape with a sharp blade. Finally, use a pointed tool to make bolt holes.
