Skimboarding
Understanding Skimboarding: Flatland and Wave Riding
Flatland skimboarding involves utilising wooden skimboards to perform aquaplaning, allowing skimmers to glide gracefully over water surfaces. Similar to skateboarding, this activity can be enjoyed in urban areas where fountains and water features serve as creative arenas for skimboarders to explore architectural elements in innovative and unexpected ways.
Wave skimming, also referred to as skim surfing, employs foam or fibreglass boards due to their superior buoyancy. In this sport, skimmers slide into the water to catch and ride waves of small to medium size. While wave skimboarding is typically enjoyed by intermediate to advanced skimmers, beginners are generally encouraged to start with flatland skimboarding, as it demands fewer technical skills initially.
Essential Skimboarding Equipment
To embark on your skimboarding journey effectively, having the appropriate gear is crucial. The primary item you'll need is a skimboard. Novices should begin with a wooden skimboard and potentially move on to a foam board if they wish to tackle the waves. Surf wax is used on the board’s surface to maintain a firm grip for your feet. Those practising on obstacles should also have a reliable piece of skate wax to enable smooth sliding. Traction pads can be sourced from our skimboard equipment range and are highly recommended for wave skimming, as they provide optimal grip and minimise the risk of slipping from the board.
