In 1977, Dale Smith suffered severe leg injuries while racing against a renowned skater from Japan in a slalom competition. Ten years on, he embarked on creating his own line of safety gear under the name Smith Safety Gear. His knee pads were pioneering, featuring an extended section below the knee designed to protect the pad.
