What Exactly Are Cross Country Ski Bindings?

Cross country ski bindings are essential components that connect your skis to your boots and come in three variants, tailored to each discipline: classic, skate, and backcountry. While selecting boots and bindings for cross country skiing, it's crucial to note that the boot soles differ by model. This implies that your boots may not be compatible with all nordic ski bindings.

Distinct Types of Cross Country Ski Bindings

Various types of cross country ski bindings exist. Today, the New Nordic Norm (NNN) is the prevalent system. Within NNN, there are regular bindings for skate and classic skiing, and NNN BC for backcountry adventures. These are distinct for their two ridges on the binding plate.

Within the NNN system, you'll encounter products branded Turnamic, Prolink, and NIS, which are simply different model names given by various brands. Importantly, these are all compatible with the NNN system. However, note that NNN BC bindings are only suited for NNN BC boots.

The Salomon Nordic System (SNS) is another method, although older and no longer in production. This system supported both classic and skating boots but with a single ridge, making SNS incompatible with the New Nordic Norm.

The latest development is Xplore BC, engineered by Rottefella. This system utilises pin technology at the toe area to enhance stability and support, and it exclusively accommodates Xplore BC boots.
