Aggressive Skate Wheels
Understanding Aggressive Skate Wheels
Wheels for aggressive inline skates have a smaller diameter compared to other inline skate wheels. These wheels typically measure between 54mm to 64mm in diameter. This compact size helps skaters stay lower to the ground, improving control, speeding up acceleration, and facilitating grinds. Aggressive wheels are notably hard and have a flat profile, resembling a rounded rectangle. This particular design aims to provide aggressive skaters with a broad and stable area for landing when executing jumps and tricks.
Selecting the Right Aggressive Inline Wheels
The choice of aggressive wheels is influenced by your style of skating. Harder wheels enable faster rolling but may slow down on uneven urban surfaces. They are best suited for skaters who focus on aggressive park skating on smooth grounds. Conversely, softer wheels offer better performance on rough terrains and are favoured by skaters executing tricks in typical urban settings.
Profiles of Aggressive Wheels: Flat, Round & Bullet
As mentioned earlier, many aggressive skaters opt for flat profile wheels. These not only enhance stability but also prevent skaters from getting stuck on obstacles during grinds.
Nonetheless, aggressive wheels are also available in round and bullet (pointy) profiles. Rounded wheels are advantageous in urban contexts, providing both stability and manoeuvrability. Bullet profile wheels are the most agile, offering rapid speed and swift turns, though at the expense of stability. Such wheels are recommended for slalom and freestyle skating in urban areas.
Aggressive Grind Wheels for Rails, Boxes and Beyond
Grind wheels are explicitly crafted for grinding in aggressive skating. They are not designed for rolling, which explains why these wheels are much harder and smaller than standard aggressive wheels. Whereas typical inline skate wheels might have a durometer hardness of 80 - 90, grind wheels are designed to be as hard as possible, generally surpassing 100A.
The use of hard inline grind wheels is essential for sliding on rails, boxes, and similar surfaces without unexpectedly gripping. Softer wheels increase friction, which can destabilise the skater and lead to falls. If skating with an anti-rocker frame, apart from swapping grind wheels, you can also replace the front and back with regular aggressive skate wheels when you're ready for an upgrade.
To further enhance the smoothness of your grinds, consider using Skate Wax.
