BMX Pegs
What Is the Purpose of BMX Pegs?
BMX bike pegs, also known as BMX stunt pegs, are vital for any freestyle rider eager to explore novel tricks. They connect to your wheel axles, allowing up to four pegs on your bike. Pegs are utilised for a range of traditional tricks, such as rail and ledge grinds, as well as flatland stunts, and are thus linked with freestyle BMX as opposed to racing or dirt jumping. When purchasing pegs, options include various materials, axle sizes, lengths, and diameters.
Whilst the majority of BMX pegs are crafted to fit the standard 10 mm front wheel axle and the 14 mm rear, always verify compatibility before purchasing.
Should You Opt for Metal or Plastic Pegs?
Both metal and plastic pegs offer benefits, depending primarily on their intended use. Metal pegs are generally manufactured from steel or aluminium. Steel pegs are robust and can endure significant wear, making them perfect for street BMX. Aluminium pegs offer an excellent compromise between strength and lightness.
Conversely, park riders often favour plastic BMX pegs, as they glide smoothly on metal. Typically, plastic pegs refer to peg sleeves, though some full plastic types are available. They are lightweight, cost-effective, and simple to replace, but they do not match the durability of metal bike pegs.
Guidance for Installing and Removing BMX Pegs
Attaching and detaching pegs is quite a straightforward task. However, you'll require a socket wrench, deep-well socket, and an Allen key. Initially, take off the washer and axle nut from the axle. Next, position your peg onto the wheel axle and pass your axle nut through the peg. Employ a socket wrench to secure both the peg and axle nut. To detach the pegs, perform the reverse procedure and turn the socket wrench anticlockwise.
Moreover, it's advisable to occasionally rotate your pegs to enhance their lifespan.
