Wetsuit Hoods & Surf Hoods
Optimal Thickness of a Surf Hood
Surf hoods are available in varying thicknesses, measured in millimetres, with thicker hoods offering greater warmth. The typical range is from 1 to 6 mm, with the most insulated models being ideal for extremely cold conditions. Many enthusiasts of water sports opt for hoods between 2 and 3 mm in neoprene to enhance warmth.
To Tuck or Not to Tuck the Neoprene Hood?
Should the surf hood be worn under the wetsuit, or should it be on top? This is a major consideration and almost a doctrine for some. Opting to place the neoprene hood inside will undoubtedly help you stay warmer; however, it may allow more water to seep into your wetsuit. You are encouraged to try both methods to see which suits you best.
Neoprene beanies present an alternative to hoods and eliminate the tucking dilemma. These do not cover as much of the skin but are convenient to use.
