Backcountry Ski Skins
Ascend the Peaks with Backcountry Ski Skins
When skiers explore beyond the boundaries of ski resorts and chairlifts are out of view, they must ascend the slopes with their skis alone. Backcountry ski skins are the essential gear that allows you to climb without sliding backwards. Constructed with mohair or nylon fibres, these skins are designed directionally to provide both glide and grip as needed. They grip the snow when pushed backwards and smoothly glide when sliding forwards.
Also referred to as ski touring skins, backcountry skins attach to the base of the skis, fastened with skin clips at both tips and tails or with adhesive that sticks to the ski bases.
Determining the Right Size for Backcountry Climbing Skins
To select the correct size for your backcountry climbing skins, it is important to know your skis' length and width. The skins should be slightly shorter and narrower than the ski dimensions to ensure optimal grip on the snow. Certain ski skins are suitable for a range of ski lengths, thanks to adjustable skin clips. If your ski length falls within this range, then that skin length would be appropriate. This information can usually be found in the product's specifications.
The width of the skins should generally be about 5 mm narrower than the ski's widest point. If the skins are too wide, they will be too close to the skis' metal edges and risk being damaged. The skin width measurement can usually be found in the specifications, product title, or by matching the skins to the precise ski model they are intended for.
Is It Possible to Shorten Ski Skins?
Skiers frequently trim skins to fit precisely. This eliminates the hassle of finding a perfectly sized pair for your skis. Many models come with a trimming tool, allowing you to cut the skins to your preferred size.
