Purchasing Hockey Gloves
This guide will assist you in selecting suitable hockey gloves.
Hockey gloves serve to protect your hands and wrists while ensuring flexibility and comfort. They are made from synthetic materials or leather (which tends to be pricier) and sometimes reinforced with Kevlar or nylon at the high-wear areas.
Glove Sizing for Hockey
Determine your glove size while donning elbow protection. Measure the span from the lower edge of the elbow pad to your fingertip. Sizes are given in inches and can differ across brands. The table below provides a good indication based on your measurement and height:
Model | Measurement | Height (approx.) | Size |
Child | 20 cm | 8" | |
Child | 23 cm | < 120 cm | 9" |
Child | 25 cm | 110 - 120 cm | 10" |
Junior | 28 cm | 120 - 130 cm | 11" |
Junior | 30 cm | 130 - 140 cm | 12" |
Junior | 33 cm | 140 - 160 cm | * 13" |
Senior | 36 cm | 160 - 180 cm | * 14" |
Senior | 38 cm | > 180 cm | * 15" |
* The finger length is identical for sizes 13", 14", 15".
Note: it is acceptable for gloves to be slightly oversized, provided they offer complete protection for your hands and wrists.
Quality of Hockey Gloves
Hockey gloves, at a minimum, ought to feature several joints per finger and a wrist-protecting sleeve. Quality gloves are anatomically shaped (meaning they come out of the box moulded in the shape your hand takes when playing hockey.) Reinforcement on the wear surface (inside the palm and on the thumb) will help your gloves endure longer.
