3 Tips to Increase Your Speed on Skates
Achieve unprecedented speeds with these 3 simple tips and techniques from speed skate world champion Felix Rijhen.
Whether you’re aiming to surpass your personal best or are new to the world of inline speed skating, we connected with Felix Rijhen, the inline speed skate world champion, to provide you with 3 tips for a successful start in the exciting and fast-paced realm of speed skating.
Find the Right Balance Between Your Skills and Gear
Choosing the right skate is crucial. Observing the pros and intermediate speed skaters, you’ll notice they often use low cuff boots. However, Felix advises that low cuff boots may not be suitable for beginners.
“Starting with a high cuff boot and smaller wheels is a good idea. As you improve, you can upgrade your gear. Opt for a longer frame, larger wheels, and eventually, a low cuff boot,” he says.
Technique is Key to Success
Now that you have your state-of-the-art speed skates, there’s one crucial element you need before outpacing your competitors.
“Don’t forget to focus on your technique. To use your skates effectively, skate fast, and have fun, you need the proper technique. Perfect your skating position and work on balancing on one foot. This will significantly enhance your skating experience,” says Felix.
